John
Wayne, probably more than any other actor, defined the movie western and
the tough good guy cowboy. Wayne also starred in a number of war
movies. Wayne's movie career spanned over 50 years and he
appeared in well over 100 movies. John Wayne had a strong friendship
with director John Ford and
appeared in over 20 of Fords movies including Stagecoach and
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (Jimmy
Stewart). Wayne won a single Best Actor Oscar for his
performance in True Grit (Robert
Duvall). John was also nominated for The Alamo and Sands of
Iwo Jima. Other notable John Wayne movies include Reap the Wild
Wind (Cecil B.
Demille), How the West Was Won (Gregory
Peck, Spencer
Tracy), and The Greatest Story Ever Told (Charlton
Heston). John Wayne has been memorialized in the naming of the
airport in Orange County as the John
Wayne Airport.
